British acts Coldplay and Duffy have received three nominations apiece at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards, to be held in Liverpool on 6 November.
Both are up for album of the year and "most addictive track". Coldplay also get a nod for act of 2008, while Duffy is up for the new act prize.
Singer Britney Spears is up for two prizes following her success at the Video Music Awards earlier this month.
R&B star Beyonce is the only performer confirmed for the show so far.
The singer, nominated for a prize in the ultimate urban category, will launch her third solo album at the event at Liverpool's Echo Arena.
Other British acts in contention include Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis, also nominated for the act of the year prize.
'Show-stopping'
Lewis's debut disc Spirit is up for the album of the year prize as well, as is American stars Alicia Keys and Spears.
Spears's other nomination comes in the Act of 2008 category, an award for which chart-topping singer Rihanna is also shortlisted.
Katy Perry's controversial number one I Kissed A Girl is among the other songs in line for the most addictive track prize.
Other nominees are All Summer Long, Kid Rock's 21st Century interpretation of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama and Pink's So What.
Other categories include best rock act and the Headliner prize for live music, with metal acts Linkin' Park and Metallica shortlisted for both.
Forty artists have also been nominated for the best act ever award, with frontrunners including the Beatles, Madonna and Take That.
Music fans have until 2 November to vote via the MTV Europe Music Awards website.
Richard Godfrey, MTV's senior vice president, promised the ceremony would feature performances from "some of the biggest names in music today".
"I am confident the bill will live up to our promise that the MTV Europe Music Awards will be the best gig in Europe this year," he added.
