Stars come out for Radcliffe play

Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe

Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has made his Broadway debut in Equus.

Glenn Close, Kathleen Turner and Mamma Mia!'s Dominic Cooper gave the actor a rousing reception as he trod the boards at New York's Broadhurst Theatre.

The 19-year-old admitted he had been "terrified" before Thursday's opening night and that he had yet to read any reviews of his performance.

Actor Richard Griffiths said his young co-star had taken "big strides" since the play's London premiere last year.

"He's not a kid anymore," said the Tony award-winner. "He's a young man and he deserves whatever breaks that brings."

Celebration

Radcliffe earned rave reviews for his performance in the London production of Peter Shaffer's play, in which he plays a disturbed teenager who blinds six horses.

The role requires him to appear naked on stage - something that did not faze Turner, who went bare herself in the stage production of The Graduate.

Glenn Close "If it's in the play, if it's in the story, if it's necessary, then it's right," said the actress. "The fact that he's willing to learn and risk is all to his credit."

After the performance, Radcliffe and Griffiths partied with 400 guests at an opening night celebration on Manhattan's west side.

The New York Times' Ben Brantley praised both actors in his review, saying they performed with "sensitivity and intelligence".

"Mr Griffiths and Mr Radcliffe are delivering utterly credible and often affecting performances," said the respected theatre critic.

Brantley was less complimentary towards the production as a whole, however, saying the play had "dated" and the staging was "oddly arid".
