Radio 1 under BBC Trust spotlight

Chris Moyles

How Radio 1 serves its listeners will form part of a comprehensive review of the corporation's services for younger audiences, the BBC Trust has announced.

BBC Three will also be under scrutiny, as will radio station 1Xtra and the BBC's teen-oriented website Switch.

"We will consider how young people are watching and using BBC programmes and services and the value they derive from them," said trustee Alison Hastings.

The trust expects to publish its review in spring 2009.

A public consultation has begun and will run until 16 December.

"We want to hear from all people. whether or not they use these services," said Ms Hastings, who is leading the review for the trust.

BBC Trust chair Sir Michael Lyons announced the watchdog body would be scrutinising programmes and services for children and young people earlier this year.

"We want to ensure that the BBC's strong record of engagement with its youngest audiences continues as those audiences grow into adulthood," he said.

"We know that young people are among the groups it can often be hardest to reach. We believe that conducting a rigorous review is the best way of providing a firm foundation for future work to ensure that children and young people get the best possible service from the BBC."
