Presenter Phillips to leave GMTV

Fiona Phillips

GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips is leaving the ITV breakfast broadcaster after 15 years.

The 47-year-old said her decision to leave was "the hardest decision I have ever made", adding: "I love the job."

"I've got other responsibilities. The children, a home life and an elderly dad who needs me - and I've recognised that I can't have it all," she said.

Phillips has been GMTV Today's main presenter since 1996. She will leave the programme at Christmas.

'Honesty and openness'

She joined GMTV when it launched in 1993 as an entertainment correspondent.

Phillips then spent two years as the Los Angeles reporter before landing the top job on the sofa.

"She's not going until Christmas which gives us plenty of opportunity to organise lots of leaving do"
Peter McHugh, GMTV's director of programming

GMTV's director of programming Peter McHugh said she would be "sorely missed".

He added: "But after all those years of getting up at 4am we can understand why she wants a change.

"Her honesty and openness have helped make GMTV the success it is. She is a tough act to follow.

"But she's not going until Christmas which gives us plenty of opportunity to organise lots of leaving dos."

Phillips is married to GMTV's programme editor Martin Frizell and the couple have two young sons.

Her agent said she would continue with other TV projects.

"Fiona is leaving GMTV but she is not leaving television," her agent said.
