Dark Knight reigns at box office

Heath Ledger as The Joker

Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight has held on to its position at number one in the UK and Ireland box office chart.

The film, starring the late Heath Ledger, took £2.3m over the weekend, taking its total takings to £40.1m.

Abba musical Mamma Mia! moved back up to second place, with takings of £2.2m after six weeks of release.

Of the week's new releases, Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess with the Zohan fared best, entering at number three, and taking £1.4m.

Teen comedy Wild Child entered at number five, while Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the animated adventures in the sci-fi franchise, reached number six in its opening week.

Mamma Mia! is to become the latest film to get the karaoke treatment as a sing-a-long version is being released.

Selected UK cinemas will be showing the musical with the subtitled songwords from 22 August, allowing audiences to sing along with the cast, which includes Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.
