Ferry to be awarded Icon honour

Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry is to be named a BMI Icon at the US performing rights organisation's annual London Awards, it has been announced.

The Icon honour is given to BMI songwriters who have had "a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers".

The 62-year-old will receive the award at the ceremony on 7 October.

Previous UK recipients include Kinks singer-songwriter Ray Davies, Steve Winwood and Van Morrison.

Continuous airplay

Ferry, who came to prominence in the 1970s as the lead vocalist and principal songwriter with Roxy Music, is best known for hits Slave to Love and More Than This.

He released his latest studio album, Dylanesque, in 2007.

The ceremony will recognise the UK, European and Jamaican songwriters and publishers of the past year and their most-played BMI songs on US radio and television.

BMI will also bestow "Million-Air" certificates on writers and publishers whose songs have achieved over three million US radio and television performances - the equivalent of more than 17 years of continuous airplay.

BMI holds a number of awards ceremonies every year. It was announced last week that The Jacksons would be named Icons at the Urban Awards in September.
