Wall-E beaten back by Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! cast

Musical Mamma Mia! has beaten off competition from newly-released Wall-E to hold on to the number one spot at the UK box office.

The Pixar animation, about a loveable trash compacting robot, took £4.3m in its opening weekend while the Abba musical netted £4.6m.

It means two weeks at the top for stars Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.

Last weekend's number two, Hancock, slipped to three, while Eddie Murphy's Meet Dave made its debut at number six.
