New role for BBC Two controller

BBC Two controller Roly Keating is to move from his current role to become the corporation's first director of archive content.

He will be responsible for improving public access to the BBC's constantly expanding archive of television, radio and multimedia content.

"This is an exciting and daunting challenge," Keating said.

He will take up his role in October. Advertisements for a new head of BBC Two will be placed in the Autumn.

Announcing the appointment, BBC director general Mark Thompson said: "The BBC has the largest audio-visual archive in the world.

"We want to make sure there is greater public access to this archive, whilst also ensuring the archive is fully exploited for the benefit of licence payers."

Keating added: "Unlocking the value of broadcast archives is one of the great opportunities opened up by digital media - and the BBC has the greatest archive of them all, with untold potential public value."

He was appointed controller of BBC Two in June 2004. He had previously been the controller of BBC Four.
