BBC Proms season gets under way

Nigel Kennedy rehearses for the Proms

The 2008 Proms season has begun with a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The Proms will feature more than 80 concerts, including 20 new works, as well as folk bands and world music.

Highlights include Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin Philharmonic and Nigel Kennedy performing at the Proms for the first time in 21 years.

The Doctor Who theme will be played at a prom exploring time and space, hosted by actress Freema Agyeman.

The concert, at the Royal Albert Hall on 27 July, will also feature Daleks, Cybermen and a pre-recorded scene featuring Doctor Who star David Tennant, alongside music from Holst and Wagner.

Maypole dancing

Friday's opening night featured works by composers including Strauss, Mozart and Messiaen.

Violinist Kennedy will perform Elgar's violin concerto at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday.

Other highlights include Daniel Barenboim conducting the West Eastern Divan Orchestra, which brings together Jewish and Arab musicians.

The Proms Folk Day, on 20 July, will feature a series of events in and around the Royal Albert Hall including story-telling, folk ensemble performances and fiddle sessions.

Maypole dancing will also take place at Kensington Gardens.

The Proms, now in their 114th year, run until 13 September.
