Huggers made BBC new media boss

Discussion on the BBC Internet Blog
Erik Huggers

Dutch-born Erik Huggers has been appointed the BBC's head of future and media technology.

Mr Huggers will become responsible for the corporation's output on the internet, interactive TV, broadband and other emerging platforms.

He will replace Ashley Highfield, who announced he was standing down in April to launch Project Kangaroo.

The project is a joint venture between the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 to provide on-demand video via the internet.

'Tremendous commitment'

Mr Huggers, who joined the BBC a year ago, will take up his role on 1 August, which will also give him a seat on the BBC's executive board.

He was previously controller of the BBC's future media and technology division.

Mr Huggers called it a "tremendous privilege" to be appointed to the role and vowed to "respond to audience demands in delivering the BBC's content across a range of media".

Speaking about Mr Huggers appointment, BBC director general Mark Thompson said: "He has shown tremendous commitment championing the iPlayer, amongst many other projects.

"I look forward to him bringing his drive and determination to this new role, helping ensure the BBC is fit for the digital future."
