Duffy to sell one million albums

Welsh soul star Duffy is to become the first artist to sell one million albums in 2008, according to the Official UK Charts Company.

But her debut album, which spent five weeks at number one, is being hotly pursued by Coldplay's Viva La Vida, which is now top of the charts.

The Welsh singer's single Mercy is the best-selling song of the year to date.

Debut albums have made a big impact so far in 2008, including maiden hits by the Ting Tings and Amy MacDonald.

Scouting For Girls and Adele have also helped debut collections make their biggest mark on the chart for eight years.

Rock band Nickleback have also enjoyed success so far this year, with their single Rockstar at number two and album All The Right Reasons at three in the rundown.

Veteran performer Neil Diamond is also in the top 10 for the year to date with his album Home Before Dark.

Duffy's single Mercy also crowned the singles chart for five weeks.
