MTV rewards Depp and giant robots

Johnny Depp was the only multiple award-winner

Johnny Depp

Film star Johnny Depp has taken home two golden popcorn prizes from the MTV Movie Awards in California.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star was given best comedic performance for his third stint as Captain Jack Sparrow, and best villain for Sweeney Todd.

But he lost the best film prize to CGI spectacular Transformers.

The ceremony took place at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, hours after a fire destroyed a movie theme park at the world famous landmark.

But Hollywood's A-list, including Tom Cruise, Mike Myers and Sarah Jessica Parker, did not address the effects of the blaze, which had only just been brought under control.

Depp kept his acceptance speech short, telling the audience: "I'm not a very funny person. I'm not even remotely funny."

Transformers star Megan Fox unleashed a string of expletives to describe how good the forthcoming sequel will be.

Director Michael Bay said filming on the second instalment would begin on Monday.

Joint joke

Will Smith won the best male performance award for his role as a post-apocalyptic survivor in I Am Legend.

MTV MOVIE AWARD WINNERS

Ellen Page Ellen Page won the female trophy for playing a pregnant teen in Juno. "I just got to be that lucky girl that played that incredible character," she said.

The awards are voted for by the public, and traditionally have some more outlandish categories than the Oscars or Baftas.

Best kiss went to Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman, stars of teen dance movie Step Up 2 The Streets, while the best fight category was won by Sean Faris and Cam Gigandet for Never Back Down.

The 2008 awards also saw the introduction of a new category, Best Summer Movie So Far - "whatever that means," joked presenter Seth Rogen.

The comedian, who starred in Superbad, courted controversy by appearing to light a joint during his stint on stage.

"Kids, don't really smoke fake weed like this," he announced to the crowd at the Gibson Amphitheatre.

MTV cut away from the stage until Rogen and co-presenter James Franco left the stage, but the stars said the network knew about the joke in advance.

"MTV wrote it!" Franco told the Associated Press news agency. "Then backstage there was this big commotion: 'You guys can't say that.'

"But it says right in the script: 'Lights fake joint.'"

Wayne's comeback

The joke fell flat with Robert Downey Jr, whose Iron Man won the best summer movie trophy.

In his acceptance speech, the star, who has battled with drug addiction in the past, said: "Thanks fellas for that intoxicating introduction."

Wayne's World Adam Sandler won the lifetime achievement honour, singing a re-worked version of the James Bond theme Nobody Does It Better.

Afterward, he sheepishly described it as "the most arrogant thing I've ever done," and sent greetings to US troops.

Meanwhile, host Mike Myers teamed up with his former Saturday Night Live colleague Dana Carvey to recreate their Wayne's World sketch.

"It's been a while," said Carvey, in character as Garth Algar. "Good call - 1994 - that's a while," responded Myers, playing Wayne Campbell.

They then listed their top 10 adult films based on hit movies from 2008, including Horton Hears a Ho, National Pleasure 2, I Am Legend... In Bed and, at number one, Iron Man.

The ceremony will be screened on MTV One in the UK at 2100 BST on Monday.
