Musical tops Tony Award shortlist

A musical written by a university student leads this year's nominations for New York's Tony theatre awards.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's In The Heights is up in 13 categories including best musical, original score, direction and performance by a featured actor.

Macbeth, starring Patrick Stewart, has picked up six nominations after a successful run in London's West End.

The Tonys will be presented by actress Whoopi Goldberg on 15 June at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Productions starring big Hollywood names were largely ignored.

The Country Girl, starring Morgan Freeman, A Bronx Tale with Chazz Palminteri and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with James Earl Jones and Terrence Howard, received no nominations.

Cyrano de Bergerac starring Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner is up for one costume award.
