Gay honour for TV hit Ugly Betty

Sitcom Ugly Betty has been honoured by a US gay lobby group at a Los Angeles awards ceremony.

The sitcom was named outstanding comedy series for the second year in a row at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards.

Another ABC show, Brothers & Sisters, took the best drama series prize.

Musicians Janet Jackson and Rufus Wainwright were also honoured for their efforts in fighting discrimination at the Kodak Theatre ceremony.

Comic Kathy Griffin was also given an award for her reality TV show My Life on the D-List.

Both Ugly Betty and Brothers and Sisters - which also received the same prize last year - feature prominent gay or transsexual regular characters.

Ugly Betty features flamboyantly gay assistant Marc St James, played by Michael Urie, and transsexual editor Alexis Meade (Rebecca Romijn).

Brothers & Sisters follows the love life of gay lawyer Kevin, played by Matthew Rhys.

The annual awards are split into four ceremonies, held in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and San Francisco between March and May.
