Winehouse arrested over 'assault'

Amy Winehouse arrives at the police station

Singer Amy Winehouse has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The 24-year-old was held after arriving at a police station in central London to be questioned about an incident said to have occurred on Wednesday.

A 38-year-old man had claimed he was assaulted by a woman of 24 in the Chalk Farm area of north London, police said.

Winehouse walked up the steps of Holborn police station flanked by a minder, having been surrounded by paparazzi on her arrival.

"A 24-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault after attending a central London police station by appointment," said a Scotland Yard spokesman.

"She is currently in custody."

Winehouse arrived at 1710 BST, more than two hours after she had been expected to be at the police station, and did not speak as she entered the building.

Earlier a spokesman for the singer said she would be attending "voluntarily", by appointment with officers.

Husband's case

Meanwhile the singer's husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, has appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London, where a provisional trial date was set for him to face charges of assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The 25-year-old, who married Winehouse last May, has denied the allegations and is due to stand trial from 2 June.

Blake Fielder-Civil Mr Fielder-Civil will remain in custody until that time.

He is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to pub landlord James King of Risley in Derbyshire.

He has also pleaded not guilty to a separate allegation that he plotted with his alleged victim to pervert the course of justice.

During Friday's hearing - which Winehouse did not attend - Mr Fielder-Civil was warned for repeatedly smiling and trying to communicate with a woman who was sitting in the public gallery.

Sophie Schandorff was formally warned to stop communicating with him too.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, she described herself as a close friend of Mr Fielder-Civil.
