McGregor fine after cancer scare

Actor Ewan McGregor says he is "fine" after having a cancerous mole removed from just below his right eye.

The 37-year-old, best known for the Star Wars prequels and Trainspotting, said doctors removed several moles on after he went for a check-up.

"I went to see a specialist who thought they were better to be removed, and indeed he was correct," he said.

McGregor, who is promoting the erotic thriller Deception, insisted the surgery was "not that big of a deal".

The star admitted he was aware that having pale skin and spending time in the sun meant he was more at risk, and it "was best to be looked at" by doctors.

Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists said McGregor "did exactly the right thing" by getting his mole checked.

"If you're worried about a mole you can see your GP who, if they think it might be cancerous, can refer you to a dermatologist," she added.

"It doesn't cost anything and there are no long waiting lists, so it's definitely better to be safe than sorry."

When asked if he found his experience frightening, McGregor said sarcastically: "It was great fun having skin cancer, it was great, I really enjoyed it."

The star married French production designer Eve Mavrakis in 1995 and the couple have three daughters.

In Deception, which is released in the UK this Friday, he plays an accountant who becomes the prime suspect in a woman's disappearance and a multi-million dollar heist.
