Rapper Remy Ma to wed in prison

Grammy-nominated hip-hop star Remy Ma is planning to marry her fiance, fellow rapper Papoose, in a New York jail.

The 26-year-old star is currently at Rikers Island prison as she awaits sentencing for shooting a woman.

"They're very committed to each other, and had intended to marry one way or another," said her lawyer Ivan Fisher.

Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith, was convicted last month of assault and could face a prison sentence of up to 25 years.

The defence team for the star told the court that she had fired a shot, but insisted it was an accident.

Protruding gems

The jury heard how Ms Smith shot her friend outside a nightclub in July 2007 because she thought the woman had stolen $3,000 (£1,495) from her.

Around 200 weddings are performed each year at the prison, which offers a chaplaincy service.

Only two guests will be permitted, and the couple will not be allowed to wear rings with protruding gems.

Papoose's Born To Win was featured on the top-selling football video game Madden NFL 06, and music magazine Rolling Stone named him one of its 10 Artists to Watch in 2006.

The Brooklyn rapper, whose real name is Shamele Mackie, also attracted attention with a track called 50 Shots.

He vented his anger in the song about a fatal 2006 New York City police shooting of an unarmed man who was hours away from getting married.
