Actor Adam Sandler breaks ankle

Adam Sandler

Movie star Adam Sandler has broken his ankle while playing basketball, his publicist has confirmed.

The 41-year-old actor, whose films include The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy, sustained the injury at the weekend - but still won the game.

He is currently filming Disney comedy Bedtime Stories, in which the lavish fairytales he invents for his niece and nephew magically come true.

Sandler's spokesman said the injury would not affect filming.

Upset coach

The comic actor made his name as a member of the iconic Saturday Night Live team in the early 1990s, alongside Mike Myers and Chris Rock.

He broke into film with the likes of Bulletproof and The Water Boy in the late 1990s, and has recently taken on more serious roles in films such as Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish.

Basketball featured heavily in the star's musical animation Eight Crazy Nights, released in 2002, and he has appeared in advertisements for the National Basketball Association.

But, according to his teachers at his High School in New Hampshire, he did not always take the sport so seriously.

"He once played his guitar at mid-court during a basketball practice and said: 'This is the only playing time I'm going to get'," guidance counsellor Robert Schiavone told the Boston Globe newspaper in 2002.

"The coach got upset," he added.
