Abba stars settle court dispute

Abba stars Bjorn Ulvaeus (left) and Benny Andersson Two former Abba stars have settled a long-running legal dispute with a playwright in a row over the credits for one of their musicals.

Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson believed credit for the musical Kristina from Duvemala should go to the play's director, Lars Rudolfsson.

But Carl-Johan Seth claimed he was the author of the screenplay.

No settlement details were given by Seth's lawyer, but he said credits would be made clear at the next show.

However, Andersson told Swedish news agency TT that Rudolfsson and dramatist Jan Mark were recognised as sole authors under the terms of the settlement.

"We are glad that we have agreed and that we can continue to be friends," Ulvaeus, Andersson and Seth said.

The musical, based on the work of Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg, traces the epic story of a 19th Century Swedish family who emigrate to the US.

It debuted in Swedish city Malmo in 1995, but before it was due to open in Stockholm a few years later the three disagreed over who received credit for the story. The dispute hit the courts in 2005.

In 2007 a court ruled in favour of the two ex-Abba members, but Seth appealed.

That appeal has now been withdrawn as part of the agreement, two days ahead of when the case was due to reach the Court of Appeal.

Seth's lawyer said his client was satisfied with the settlement and that there were plans for a new performance of the musical.
