Oprah gains her own US TV network

Oprah Winfrey Chat show host Oprah Winfrey is to launch a US TV network named after her. Winfrey will become chairwoman of OWN - the Oprah Winfrey Network - which will be available in 70m homes on satellite.

But her chat show contract means she is unlikely to be seen regularly on screen - it prohibits reruns on the channel and remains in force until 2011.

It will focus on issues such as money, health and relationships. "This is an evolution of what I've been able to do every day," Winfrey said.

"I will now have the opportunity to do this 24 hours a day on a platform that goes on forever," she added.

The new channel is being created through a deal with media giant Discovery Communications, which will see its Discovery Health channel relaunch as OWN.

Ownership of the network is being split 50-50 between Discovery and Winfrey's company, Harpo Productions.

In return, Winfrey is giving her new business partner half ownership of her Oprah.com website.
