Green prize for Live Earth shows

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl The Live Earth concerts and Denmark's Roskilde Festival are to be honoured with environmental awards at the music industry's biggest annual event.

They will join Switzerland's Paleo Festival Nyon in winning a prize for ecological live event production at the Midem Green World Awards in Cannes.

The awards pay tribute to those who have promoted a greater awareness of environmental issues.

The 42nd Midem music conference takes place later this month.

It draws thousands of music industry professionals from around the world.

The awards recognise how each of the events tried to make themselves environmentally sustainable.

Live Earth set out strict "green guidelines" aimed at creating a "low-impact" event. The series of concerts around the world, which included a show at London's Wembley Stadium, took place in July 2007 and were designed to highlight issues surrounding climate change.

At Roskilde, one of Europe's largest music festivals, all drinks are served in plastic mugs with 97% being returned to recycling deposit points. First held in 1971, the four-day event attracts over 100,000 people each year, with Radiohead among the bands taking part in 2008.

Paleo Festival Nyon is powered by a single green energy source which utilises wind and water energy from the Swiss Alps. First held in 1976, more than 220,000 people come each July for a line-up featuring rock, hip-hop classical music, French chanson and street theatre. Arctic Monkeys and Pink played there last year.
