Liza Minnelli collapses on stage

Liza Minnelli Veteran singer Liza Minnelli has collapsed on stage during a performance in Sweden and is returning to the US for a medical examination.

Promoter Michael Silfverskiold told the Reuters news agency a crew member caught her as she fell off stage and that she escaped additional injuries.

"You could see she was in pain," he said. "It was a terrible situation."

Concert spokesman Zlatko Nedanovski told the Associated Press the star passed out as she walked off stage.

The cause of the collapse is unknown.

A spokeswoman for the 61-year-old singer said Minnelli was "rushed back to her hotel by her manager" after she became "very ill" during the show.

Liz Rosenburg said Minnelli was examined by a doctor at the hotel, who advised her to return to New York immediately for further medical investigation.

'Felt dizzy'

The decision for her to fly home was made in consultation with her New York physician.

"They decided together with her management that it's best for Liza to go to the US right away," Mr Nedanovski said.

She had felt dizzy before getting up on stage but decided to proceed with the show anyway, he added.

Minnelli, daughter of actress Judy Garland, has been a singer, dancer and actress since her childhood.

She has appeared in numerous films and stage shows and won the best actress Academy Award for her performance in the 1972 film Cabaret.
