Sir Ian McKellen presented the final award of the evening to his fellow Yorkshireman for his "outstanding contribution to showbusiness".

The veteran broadcaster was also saluted with a filmed tribute featuring contributions from Billy Connolly, Dame Diana Rigg and David and Victoria Beckham.

Singer and musician Myleene Klass hosted the event at London's Hilton Hotel, held in aid of the Variety Club children's charity.

Broadcaster Gloria Hunniford looked on as Joseph star Mead picked up a new talent award named in honour of her daughter, the late Caron Keating.

Before accepting his prize, 26-year-old Mead sang Any Dream Will Do from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

Other performers included Irish boy band Westlife and Welsh soprano Katherine Jenkins, who were named recording artists and classical performer of the year respectively.

Controversial US talk show host Jerry Springer received an international award from actress Patsy Kensit, while actor Philip Glenister was honoured for his role as DCI Gene Hunt in Life on Mars.

The BBC's Strictly Come Dancing was voted favourite TV show - an award decided by Daily Express readers.

Theatre prizes, meanwhile, went to actor David Suchet and the cast of West End musical Cabaret.

Now in their 55th year, the awards will be broadcast on Sky later this month.
