Razorlight have headlined the first night of this year's Reading Festival, while The Smashing Pumpkins topped the bill at its twin event in Leeds.
Fans have had to contend with mud in parts of the Reading site, which were still waterlogged after floods in July.
Organisers had to close some camping areas as a result and turn a car park into an emergency campsite.
But the BBC Radio Five Live's Colin Paterson said: "Thankfully, the main arena wasn't that bad yesterday."
Forecasters are predicting fine, warm weather for the rest of the weekend.
All bands are playing at both venues over the three-day event, with an estimated 80,000 fans at each site.
Razorlight, Kings of Leon, Interpol and Ash - who played at Reading on Friday - went on to appear at Leeds on Saturday.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Arcade Fire, Bloc Party and The View were among the attractions at Reading on Saturday.
Last week, festival organiser Melvin Benn said the summer had been "bloody awful", and that some areas of the Reading site had been waist-high in water a month ago.
"We will be able to stage the world's greatest rock festival despite what climate change and the weather have thrown at us," he said.
Mr Benn recently said that the Leeds site was in an excellent condition.
