Although the summer blockbusters dominated, there was also room for more specialised films.

Approximately 50,000 UK cinema-goers chose one of the following five releases: Partner, Sherrybaby, La Vie en Rose, Tell No One or Moliere.

Film Distributors' Association chief executive Mark Batey said: "The brave decision to open at the same time as the summer blockbusters has certainly paid off for films like Sherrybaby.

"There is an amazing strength and variety of films out there which give audiences, with perhaps a more independent spirit, an alternative."
