Free Gilbert & George art online

Planed, by Gilbert and George For just 48 hours, art lovers will be able to download an original work by artists Gilbert and George.

The artwork, Planed, will be available on BBC and Guardian websites, following the BBC One arts show Imagine, which celebrates the artistic duo on Tuesday.

Featuring distorted images of the pair against images of a plane tree, the art can be downloaded in nine separate panels an unlimited number of times.

It is reported to be the brainchild of Imagine presenter Alan Yentob.

"This is the sort of thing that has never been done before," said Mr Yentob.

"But when I saw how Gilbert and George made their pictures it was clear this would be a perfect match," he told the Guardian.

The art can be found on bbc.co.uk/imagine and guardian.co.uk/art after the transmission of Tuesday's show at 2325 BST.

Retrospective

The Imagine show follows a retrospective of the artists' work at London's Tate Modern, which closed on Monday.

Gilbert and George, known for their sharp suits and dour expressions, have courted controversy over the course of their career with paintings like Dirty Words Pictures.

The Anglo-Italian pair met at St Martin's School of Art in London in the 1960s.

Their early career included a spell as performance artists with works such as The Singing Sculpture, in which they were covered with metallic gold paint and mimed to the song Underneath The Arches for long periods.

The pair, who are rarely seen apart, consider themselves as living sculptures. They won the Turner Prize in 1986.
