Arctics' album storms to the top

Alex Turner of The Arctic Monkeys The Arctic Monkeys have debuted at the top of the chart with their new album Favourite Worst Nightmare.

The band, who sold an estimated 85,000 copies of their record on its first day of sale, are expected to score the best-selling album of the year so far.

The four-piece's single Brianstorm slipped from two to seven, while the album's 11 other tracks all landed inside the top 200 on downloads alone.

Beyonce and Shakira remained on top of the singles chart with Beautiful Liar.

Renewed interest

Avril Lavigne and former number one Timbaland both climbed one place to number two and three, while Mika moved up 12 places to six with Love Today, his follow-up to his chart-topping debut Grace Kelly.

Scottish act Travis registered a climb of 26 places with their song Closer, while the Manic Street Preachers made their debut at 26 with Your Love Alone Is Not Enough.

Renewed interest in their debut album Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not was expected to propel a further six Arctic Monkeys songs into the chart, but the album failed to break back into the Top 40.

Gennaro Castaldo of music retailer HMV said: "You'd probably have to go back to the hey-day of the Beatles in the early-mid 60s to find anything that could come close to matching this."

Sales figures for the Arctic Monkeys' second album will not match the sales of their debut, which sold 360,000 copies in its first week of release last year.
