BBC scraps Heaven and Earth Show

Gloria Hunniford BBC One's long-running Sunday morning religious series The Heaven and Earth Show is to end after nine years.

The show is currently hosted by Gloria Hunniford and its slot will be filled by two new religious programmes, Heart And Soul and Life From the Loft.

BBC daytime controller Jay Hunt said the shows were "brave new ideas" and "creatively strong".

A BBC spokesman said it was hoped that the new programmes would "invigorate" the 1000-1100 slot.

Heart And Soul (the working title) will have a panel and a studio audience who debate the "religious, moral and ethical questions exercising the nation".

Life From the Loft will be a magazine show designed to "take the defining issues of our age including faith, spirituality and morality and make them more appealing and accessible", according to the BBC.

Adam Kemp, the BBC's commissioning editor for arts, music and religion, said religious programmes were "undergoing an exciting change".

"The fact that two new shows will be appearing in this important daytime slot underlines our commitment to this genre," he said.
