Disturbia commands US box office

Shia LaBeouf in Disturbia Surveillance thriller Disturbia has made its debut at the top of the North American box office.

The film, which stars Shia LaBeouf as a housebound teenager who suspects a neighbour of murder, made $23m (£11.5m) in its first weekend.

Perfect Stranger, starring Halle Berry and Bruce Willis, had to settle with the number four spot on its opening.

War epic 300 remained in the top 10 and became the first film of 2007 to make more than $200m (£100.5m).

The only other new entry in the box office chart was Pathfinder at number six, about a Viking boy raised as a Native American in North America.

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's double feature Grindhouse fell six places to number 10, with its takings dipping by 63% compared to last week, according to early figures.

The film, a homage to low-budget horror movies of the 1970s, was expected to take $20m ($10.1m) in its first weekend, but made a disappointing $11.6m ($5.9m).

Will Ferrell's skating comedy slipped to second place following a two-week reign as the box office leader

Last week Disturbia protagonist LaBeouf was confirmed for a role in the fourth film of the Indian Jones series, due for release in May 2008.

The 20-year-old actor will play alongside Harrison Ford, who will reprise the part of the titular action hero.

Later this year LaBeouf will provide the lead voice for animated penguin comedy Surf's Up and will star in science-fiction adventure Transformers.

"2007 is Shia's year. He proved he can open a movie all by himself," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers.
