Al Gore to be honoured with Emmy

Al Gore and An Inconvenient Truth director Davis Guggenheim at the Oscars Former US vice president Al Gore is to receive an honorary International Emmy award for his work in broadcasting.

Gore will be recognised for his hard-hitting environmental documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which won two Academy Awards last month.

His pivotal role in setting up Current TV, which features programmes made by viewers, is also being honoured.

The Founders Award, given to those who "touch our common humanity", will be presented to Gore in November.

The International Emmy awards ceremony will take place in New York.

'Honour'

"We in the media industry are honoured that one of the world's leading political figures has joined our global community of broadcasters," said the organisation's president Bruce Paisner.

Al Gore

Gore said it was an "honour" to be recognised by the International Emmys academy.

"Like Current TV, it strives to create a global conversation through the powerful medium of television," said Gore, who co-founded the channel in 2005.

Gore is the author of An Inconvenient Truth, about the threat of global warming and potential solutions of the problem.

It was adapted for the screen and won two Oscars, for best documentary and best original song.
