Mr Bean drives in for new movie

Mr Bean at the premiere Rowan Atkinson brought his bumbling character Mr Bean to the West End for the premiere of his latest movie.

Mr Bean's Holiday follows the accident-prone Bean on a break in the south of France which sees him stumble into the Cannes Film Festival.

Atkinson arrived in Leicester Square in Mr Bean's trademark lime green Mini and went on a walkabout to meet the crowd.

He was joined by Hollywood star Willem Dafoe who plays a bullying film director in the comedy.

'Vulnerable and naive'

Atkinson, who was joined by wife Sunetra after he put away the tweed jacket, said he still enjoyed playing the character: "He's a child and it's fun playing a child. He exhibits all the characteristics of childhood.

"He seems quite innocent and vulnerable and naive and then suddenly he's transformed into the most aggressive and vindictive and self-centred individual you've ever met.

"That's what a 10-year-old boy can be if he hasn't got a parent controlling him."

Dafoe said of his "egotistical" director role: "I've known a few of those in my time".

The star of films including Spider-Man and Platoon said it was "a pleasure doing comedy".

The premiere was in aid of Comic Relief and the film opens nationwide on 30 March.

The first film starring Atkinson's character, Bean, was released 10 years ago and made $227m (£116m) worldwide - 10 times its estimated budget of $22m (£11m).
