Cowell 'bigger than Springsteen'

Simon Cowell Music producer Simon Cowell has said he should be paid five times more than $100m (£51m) signing Bruce Springsteen by their record label Sony BMG.

The X Factor judge, speaking on a US TV programme to be screened on Sunday, said: "I sell more records than Bruce Springsteen, sure."

"In the last five years I've sold over 100m records. If he got $100m, I should have got $500m," Cowell added.

X Factor winners from more than 30 countries are all signed to the label.

'Biggest artist'

The music producer is responsible for signing the winner of American Idol, which he called "the biggest artist on the planet".

The show's runners-up are also distributed by labels which are part of the Sony group.

Anderson Cooper, who interviewed Cowell for the 60 Minutes programme on CBS, asked whether his own deal with Sony BMG was worth as much as Springsteen's.

"A hundred million, that's a great deal. For him, it's a good deal," said Cowell.

In December last year, Cowell struck a deal with ITV to remain on The X Factor in the UK until 2009, reportedly worth £20m ($39m).

He has a separate deal with the Fox network in the US to appear as a judge on American Idol.
