Dame Helen Mirren is in the running for a TV award following her best actress victory in the Academy Awards.
She has been nominated for best actress at the Royal Television Society Awards for her role in ITV1's Prime Suspect, which is also up for best drama serial.
Stephen Merchant will take on Catherine Tate for best comedy performance. But Ricky Gervais, Merchant's co-star in BBC Two's Extras, is not shortlisted.
Doctor Who, Life on Mars and The Street will compete for best drama series.
The awards will be presented on Tuesday 13 March at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Dame Helen is up against BBC Four's Fear of Fanny star Julia Davis, and Susan Lynch, of BBC Two's Soundproof, in the best actress category.
Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent is also up for a best actor prize for his role in Channel 4 drama Longford.
Entertainment performance
How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria, I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and Channel 4's Friday Night Project are shortlisted for best entertainment show.
Friday Night Project hosts Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr are also in the running for best entertainment performance along with comedian Harry Hill - host of ITV1's TV Burp - and BBC Two's Never Mind The Buzzcocks frontman Simon Amstell.
Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson and chef Gordon Ramsay are both nominated for best presenter.
EastEnders misses out in the best soap category, with Coronation Street vying for the accolade alongside fellow ITV1 shows Emmerdale and The Bill.
There is also no best daytime programme nomination this year for Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, who are currently facing controversy over their Channel 4 phone-in quiz.
The Paul O'Grady Show and This Morning lead the nominees for this category.
