Brookside's Sinbad joins Street

Michael Starke Former Brookside star Michael Starke, best known for playing Thomas "Sinbad" Sweeney in the Channel 4 soap, has landed a new role in Coronation Street.

Starke will play single dad Jerry Morton in the ITV1 soap, moving into Charlie Stubbs' old house and opening a takeaway in a former bakery.

Other family members include 17-year old twins Mel and Darryl, played by Emma Edmondson and Jonathan Dixon.

Starke will make his first appearance on screen on 18 March.

Two of the soap family members have already been introduced to viewers - Jodie, played by Samantha Seager, is Jerry's eldest daughter and has been seen giving builder Jason Grimshaw a hard time over his refit of the new takeaway.

Her Granddad has also appeared in several episodes.

Granddad Morton, seemingly a man of few words, is played by former Early Doors star Rodney Litchfield.

Another new face will be Jessica Barden, who plays the youngest Morton daughter, 12-year-old Kayleigh.

Off-screen, there is a half-brother Finlay who lives with their mum Theresa.

Jerry, in his 40s, is described as a hard-working man who dotes on his family and has no qualms on dodging the taxman.

Starke, who left Brookside in 1999, also played chief porter Ken Hopkirk in ITV hospital drama The Royal.
