Elaine Paige returns to West End

Elaine Paige Actress and singer Elaine Paige will return to the West End stage in May with the lead role in hit Broadway musical The Drowsy Chaperone.

Paige, known for her roles in musicals such as Evita, Cats and Chess, will play a Broadway starlet who wants to give up the stage to get married.

It is thought to be her first singing role in the West End for seven years.

Paige, 58, said she was "very excited" about her return. The musical previews at the Novello theatre from 14 May.

The Drowsy Chaperone will have its premiere on 6 June.

The musical has won five Tony Awards in the US since it opend at the Marquis theatre on Broadway last year.

Paige has recorded 16 solo albums and taken part in six musical soundtracks during her career, which took off when she landed the lead role of Eva Peron in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita.

She was made an OBE in 1995 for her services to musical theatre and launched her weekly radio programme Elaine Paige on Sunday on BBC Radio 2 in 2004.
