Spitting Image puppets snapped up

Margaret Thatcher puppet Spitting Image puppets of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher and leader-in-waiting Gordon Brown have been sold at auction in London.

The puppets, used in the long-running ITV satirical show, sold for £5,040 and £4,800 respectively in a Film and Rock 'n' Roll Memorabilia sale at Bonham's.

But a guitar used by Mike Oldfield to record Tubular Bells failed to sell.

The Fender guitar - previously owned by Marc Bolan - had been expected to fetch £25,000-£35,000 at the sale.

Superman suit

The guitar has been donated by Oldfield to be sold on behalf of the mental health charity Sane.

A suit previously owned by Marc Bolan, which features on the cover of a recent T-Rex greatest hits album, was also among the items up for auction.

Mr Brown's Spitting Image creation had been expected to eclipse Lady Thatcher's puppet at the London sale.

The puppet of the Chancellor was expected to fetch £3,000 to £4,000, while the former Conservative leader was predicted to fetch between £2,500 and £3,500.

The latex puppet of Lady Thatcher was snapped up for by the Imperial War Museum, while the Chancellor was sold to a private buyer.

A Superman suit worn by Christopher Reeve in the 1978 film sold for £8,400.
