Garland recordings fail to sell

Judy Garland in The Wizard Of Oz Four recordings made by a young Judy Garland have failed to sell at a Los Angeles auction.

Bidding for the two acetate records, which have never been heard in public, reached $22,500 (£11,500), which was short of the required minimum.

The recordings, made when Garland was 12, and called Frances Gumm, include a version of The Good Ship Lollipop.

It was the second time they failed to sell, after record companies passed on the chance to buy them.

Auction house Bonhams and Butterfields said the owner, who remains anonymous, may decide to go to auction again or keep the records.

Clearout

The discs, which were expected to sell for $40,000 (£20,354), were found during a clear-out of a house once owned by the star.

It is still unclear whether the acetate discs were originals pressed in 1935 or made later for Garland's personal library.

Garland shot to fame after starring in The Wizard of Oz at the age of 16 in 1939, and was 47 when she died in 1969 of a prescription drug overdose.

She was ranked by the American Film Institute as number eight in its greatest female stars of all time list.

Other items at Sunday's auction included a 1962 handwritten note from Marilyn Monroe to Marlon Brando asking help in getting acting coach Lee Strasberg to see her in Los Angeles, which sold for $7,638 (£9,905).
