Hollywood actress Kathleen Turner has been named best actress at this year's Evening Standard Theatre Awards.
Turner, whose film credits include The Jewel of the Nile, won the prize for her role as Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll won best play, with lead actor Rufus Sewell taking the best actor prize.
A special editor's award was given to Peter Morgan's Frost/Nixon for outstanding contribution to theatre.
Running theme
The play, starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella, was short-listed in four categories but was edged out of all of them.
The play focuses on David Frost's interviews with former US President Richard Nixon following the Watergate scandal.
The play's nominations included best play and best actor for Sheen, who was short-listed alongside Sewell, Kevin Spacey for A Moon for the Misbegotten, and Bill Irwin for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
With high-profile musicals dominating the West End, the Evening Standard judges awarded the National Theatre's Caroline, or Change - which deals with racial prejudice in 1960s America - its best musical prize.
It beat Spamalot, Sunday in the Park and Andrew Lloyd-Webber's revived Evita to the prize.
Other winners included Marianne Elliott, who took the best director award for The Pillars of the Community.
Judge Nicholas de Jongh, the Evening Standard's theatre critic, said: "There is a running theme in this year's awards' list.
"It reflects the concern of both the judges and the Evening Standard itself that the straight plays are in danger of being squeezed out of the West End; that they enjoy a valuable, historic role there and their survival should not be left to the subsidised play houses like the National and The Royal Court.
"I think the editor's own award to Frost/Nixon a fine banner-waving intervention in this cause - and all the judges supported her decision."
The winners of the 52nd Evening Standard Theatre Awards were honoured at a lunchtime awards ceremony at London's Savoy Hotel on Monday.
Guests at this year's ceremony included Sinead Cusack - who was also nominated for best actress - Jeremy Irons, Kristin Scott Thomas, Dominic West, Stephen Daldry, Kathy Burke and Sir John Mortimer.
