Snoop Dogg faces weapons charge

Snoop Dogg US rap star Snoop Dogg has been charged with possession of a deadly weapon at a California airport.

A collapsible truncheon was discovered in the rapper's baggage as he boarded a flight to New York in September.

If convicted, Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, faces up to three years in prison.

Last month, the 35-year-old was charged with separate counts of possessing guns and drugs after being searched and arrested at another California airport.

An arrest warrant has been issued for the hip-hop star over the latest charges, who was in Copenhagen on Thursday night to perform at the MTV Europe Music awards.

"He either turns himself in or he gets picked up by law enforcement," said a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Movie prop

Prosecutors had contacted the musician's representatives and asked that he surrender, she added.

"These charges are bogus. The District Attorney knows that," said a lawyer for the rapper. "If this goes to trial, we will win."

The rapper told deputies at the time of his arrest that the 20 inch (50.8cm) baton was a prop for a movie, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

Earlier this year, Snoop Dogg was cautioned by police in London following a brawl at Heathrow Airport.

He was acquitted of murder in 1996 following the death of an alleged gang member who was killed by gunfire from the vehicle Snoop Dogg was travelling in.

The rapper was convicted in 1990 of cocaine possession and charged with gun possession after being stopped for a routine police check in 1993.

He pleaded guilty in exchange for three years' probation and a promise to make public service announcements denouncing violence.
