Baron Cohen 'gets £22m film deal'

Borat Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen has reportedly signed a $42.5m (£22m) film deal starring his comic creation Bruno.

Baron Cohen, who last week launched his film starring spoof Kazakhstan reporter Borat in London, will play the gay Austrian fashion obsessive.

According to Hollywood Reporter, a deal has been made with Universal Pictures.

Bruno first cropped up in the TV series Da Ali G Show and is the third of Baron Cohen's characters to hit the big screen after Ali G and Borat.

Universal Pictures has agreed to pay the sum for the film rights, and a production budget of up to $25m (£13.1m), the trade paper reported.

Shocking comments

Universal has made no comment about the deal, the Reuters news agency reported.

Bruno visits fashion shows and often prompts his guests into making outrageous comments about the fashion industry.

The news follows controversy surrounding the comedy film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

The film, which sees Baron Cohen play the naively offensive Kazakh TV reporter on a journey around the US, has caused controversy in Kazakhstan, with officials unhappy at Kazakhs being described as misogynists, racists and anti-Semites who drink horse urine.

Borat thrust Kazakhstan into the headlines by describing it as a place where "hunting dogs is a national sport", "porn is a popular pastime" and "age of consent has recently been raised to 10 years old".

The film prompted Kazakh deputy foreign minister Rakhat Aliyev to invite the comic to the Central Asian republic.

"I'd like to invite Cohen here. He can discover a lot of things," he said.
