Doherty's drug progress 'mixed'

Pete Doherty Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty's lawyer has described the star's battle to come off drugs as a "mixed bag".

The 27-year-old appeared at Thames Magistrates Court in east London for a review of his treatment after pleading guilty to drug possession in August.

Defence counsel Bruce Clark said: "On the whole, progress is being made," adding the singer's appearance had "certainly improved".

The singer was ordered to return to court for a further review in January.

'Optimistic'

District judge Jane McIvor said: "Weekly appointments under the order had not been as successful as expected."

Doherty who appeared wearing a grey shirt and dark trousers told the court he was still seeking treatment.

"I've been going to NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meetings and seeing a counsellor separate from the Priory," he said.

When asked by the judge if he was still optimistic, he replied: "Yes".

Mr Clark told the court: "He's giving up a lifestyle he's been living in the East End which is not the best place for him to be.

"There are alternatives for him though. He is now living at an address out of London," he added.

Waiting photographers

Doherty's progress will be reviewed again in three months' time.

The star's sentencing was originally deferred to 4 December after it was decided he should attend rehabilitation.

On leaving the court building the singer was pushed and shoved by waiting photographers.

Doherty refused to answer any questions on reports that he was going to marry his girlfriend, super-model Kate Moss.

The star got into the back of a people carrier with blacked out windows which sped off with the door still open.
