Shakira leads Latin Grammys list

She is nominated for best record, song and short music video for La Tortura, and best album and female pop vocal album for Fijacion Oral Vol 1.

The star's Wyclef Jean collaboration Hips Don't Lie spent three weeks at the top of the UK singles chart last month.

The ceremony, for Spanish and Portuguese-speaking artists, will be held in New York on 2 November.

"Practically all the nominations today reflect a brush-stroke of every aspect of Latin music and Shakira is one of those," Gabriel Abero, president of the Latin Recording Academy, told Reuters.

Highest sales

Shakira, who has sold 30 million albums, has not picked up a Latin Grammy award since 2002.

Fijacion Oral Vol 1 won best Latin rock/alternative album at the 2005 Grammys, and female Latin pop album at the Latin Billboard Awards.

In the first week of its US release, 157,000 copies were sold, the highest for any Spanish language album.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Arjona of Guatemala, who has sold more than 12 million records, was shortlisted for record of the year and song of the year for the ballad Acompaname a Estar Solo, while his album Adentro was nominated for best male pop vocal album.
