Owen thriller tops UK box office

Michael Caine and Clive Owen in Children of Men Futuristic thriller Children of Men has knocked Will Ferrell's comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby off the top of the UK box office chart.

The Alfonso Cuaron film, based on the novel by PD James and starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore, made £1.28m in its first three days on release.

Royal drama The Queen remains at two, while Ferrell's film drops to three.

Fellow comedies Trust the Man, Dirty Sanchez and Clerks 2 opened at the bottom end of this week's Top 10.

Trust the Man - Moore's second film in this week's chart - made its debut at eight, while Dirty Sanchez, the film version of the MTV stunt show, entered at nine.

Kevin Smith's belated sequel to his 1994 breakthrough hit Clerks is in 10th place with weekend takings of £223,058.

An Inconvenient Truth, former presidential hopeful Al Gore's documentary about climate change, entered the chart in 12th place in its second week on release.

On a screen-for-screen basis, however, it outperformed every one of the week's other new entries apart from Children of Men.

This Thursday sees the UK release of World Trade Center, Oliver Stone's film about the New York terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.

On a lighter note cinemas will also be presenting Click, Adam Sandler's fantastical farce about a man gifted with a magical remote control.
