Frost creator angry with police

David Jason as Inspector Frost The creator of the character Detective Frost has threatened to stop writing pro-police stories involving him after falling out with Essex police.

Author Rodney Wingfield says it is because his nephew was wrongly arrested on suspicion of shoplifting.

His agent of 30 years, Jacqui Lyons said: "I'm not reading into this that he's killing the character off."

Essex police said: "We will be contacting Mr Wingfield in order to discuss his concerns."

They added: "It would be a great shame if Mr Wingfield killed off his character Jack Frost because of this. I know the character is very popular with members of the public and indeed our own staff."

"My current pro-police Frost book will be my last"

Wingfield is said to be angry at the way Essex police treated his nephew and has made a formal complaint.

In a letter to his agent the 54-year-old author said: "My current pro-police Frost book will be my last."

Popular character

But Ms Lyons is adamant this does not mean the end of Frost.

"We don't know what will happen with the Frost character, and what Rodney does with him is his business. But it could be that he leaves and does something else."

The writer is currently working on the final draft of his sixth Frost novel.

Back in 1993 David Jason who plays ITV's on screen character of DI Jack Frost was voted Britain's top TV detective by readers of What's On TV magazine.
