The Vatican's museums are planning to add modern art to their collections, according to reports in Italy.
Museums director Francesco Buranelli told newspaper La Stampa he "would like very much to have a Picasso".
The museums, in their 500th year, house Michelangelo's famous ceiling in the Sistine Chapel as well as paintings by Raphael, da Vinci and Caravaggio.
Mr Buranelli told the paper further acquisitions were planned, "above all in sectors like contemporary art".
The Vatican's museums are among the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with three million visitors seeing its art, sculptures, tapestries and maps every year
They were founded when Pope Julius II - who was the pontiff from 1503 to 1513 - brought together a group of sculptures.
