Robert Downey Jr Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr has signed a deal to write his memoirs.

The book will be "a candid look at the highs and lows of his life and career", publisher HarperEntertainment told the Associated Press (AP) news agency.

The 41-year-old's widely reported drug problems led to prison, rehabilitation and probation in the 1990s.

He can currently be seen playing a drug user in A Scanner Darkly, an animated movie based on live-action footage. His book is set to be published in 2008.

HarperEntertainment, an imprint of publishing giant HarperCollins, has not disclosed the terms of the book deal.

Robert Downey Jr in A Scanner Darkly According to executive Marjorie Braman, Downey Jr's "dramatic personal life... adds a layer of complexity to who he is".

"He has an intelligence which shines through all his performances, revealing his intellect as well as his acting abilities," she told AP.

Born in New York in 1965, Downey Jr is the son of writer-director Robert Downey, who gave him his first role in 1970 film Pound.

He received an Oscar nomination for 1993's Chaplin, had a recurring role in TV's Ally McBeal and was seen earlier this year in George Clooney's film Good Night, and Good Luck.
