Warhol's wig sells for $10,800

Andy Warhol's wig A trademark silver wig worn by pop artist Andy Warhol has sold for $10,800 (£5,900) at an auction in New York.

The hairpiece, including three strips of toupe tape, was worn by Warhol in the 1980s.

Warhol first wore wigs in the 1960s to cover up baldness, but they went on to become more of a fashion statement.

The sale was part of a Christie's film and entertainment auction. A dress worn by Marilyn Monroe during filming of The Misfits sold for $66,000 (£36,100).

An ermine coat belonging to the star went for $50,400 (£27,600), while a telephone and address book belonging to Monroe sold for $31,200 (£24,800).

The book listed well-known friends such as Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior, along with contact numbers for Monroe's physician, psychiatrist and her psychoanalyst.

A collection of three wristwatches belonging to Clark Gable fetched $26,400 (£14,270).

Other Warhol lots included a 1977 polaroid of Muhammad Ali taken by the artist and signed by the boxing legend - it sold for $19,200 (£10,500), more than twice the pre-sale estimate.
