A remake of cult horror movie The Omen made $12.6m (£6.8m) on its opening day at the US box office, says studio Fox.
The film's unusual Tuesday debut was chosen deliberately because of its date - 6 June, 2006. The number 666 is often referred to as the mark of the devil.
Mia Farrow stars in the movie as a nanny who dotes on her charge Damien, the son of Satan. The film scored a record figure for a Tuesday debut.
The original Omen, released in 1976, won an Oscar for best film score.
The new version is directed by John Moore, who also made Behind Enemy Lines.
Liev Schreiber, who starred in the remake of The Manchurian Candidate and Julia Stiles, have taken on the roles made famous by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick in the original.
As in the UK, the majority of films open in the US on Fridays. But the highest single-day opening was on a Thursday, when last year's Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith took $50m (£27m).
