Jolie donation to help baby wards

Angelina Jolie Actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are to donate $300,000 (£160,000) towards maternity equipment in Namibia, where their daughter Shiloh was born.

The money will be spent on treating new babies at state hospitals in two towns in the southern African country.

"We want to contribute to Namibia and the people who have been so gracious to us at this time," the couple said.

They tried to avoid the media spotlight in the run-up to the birth by staying at a heavily-guarded seaside retreat.

Deputy environment and tourism deputy minister Leon Jooste said the couple's donation would "contribute significantly" to the health of Namibian babies.

The couple also gave $15,000 (£8,000) to a school and community centre they recently visited in the Mondesa area of Swakopmund.

The government of Namibia helped Pitt and Jolie in their quest for privacy by refusing entry to reporters wanting to cover the baby's birth without the couple's written permission.

The beach by the hotel where the couple have been staying - in the village of Langstrand - has been surrounded with large green barriers, while bodyguards and undercover police officers are patrolling the area.

Namibian citizenship offered

Mr Jooste said the new parents would remain in Namibia "for some time" to give them space to recover.

Baby Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt is to be offered Namibian citizenship.

She was born at 0140 local time (0040 GMT) on Sunday at the private Welwitschia Clinic in Walvis Bay.

Jolie, 30, has two adopted children, from Ethiopia and Cambodia. She and Pitt were linked romantically soon after filming Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005.

Pitt, 42, divorced actress Jennifer Aniston last October, while Jolie - star of the Tomb Raider movies - was previously married to actors Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.

Last year Pitt announced his intention to become Jolie's children's adoptive father.
