Elton clears closet for charity

Sir Elton John Sir Elton John is clearing out his wardrobe as he sells off more than 10,000 items of his and partner David Furnish's clothing for charity.

The collection is on sale for five days at a New York shop, Elton's Closet.

Prices start from $15 (£8.50) for a T-shirt to $5,000 (£2,900) for a full-length cashmere coat.

The sale has become an annual event, with money going towards the Elton John Aids Foundation, which has raised more than $90m (£51.5m).

Sir Elton said: "David and I had great fun collecting and wearing these extraordinary clothes, but it's even more satisfying to see them help raise money for the Elton John Aids Foundation."

Items for sale include the pink polka-dot suit worn by Sir Elton when he performed at the Grammys with Eminem in 2001.

The performance caused controversy because the US rapper had been accused of homophobia by gay rights campaigners.

There is also a huge collection of shoes and accessories as well as clothing by designers Versace, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada.

The clothes are on sale in the specially-created shop at the Rockefeller Center, where there is rail upon rail of brightly coloured suits, shirts and jackets.

Saks Fifth Avenue department store will also dedicate its window displays to the sale.

Sir Elton regularly sells off his belongings to benefit his Aids charity, which he launched in 1992.

His other fundraising activities include his annual Oscars party, which attracts some of Hollywood's biggest stars who donate at least $2,500 (£1,330) to attend.
